The Importance of Imagining the Future

In 2001, a few weeks after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, Jean Lanoix decided to take a sabbatical year to write a book on the future of the Internet.

Two quotes particularly inspired Jean as he was researching and writing the book:

  • Peter F. Drucker«The best way to predict your future is to create it!»
    - Peter F. Drucker
  • Buckminster Fuller«We are called to be architects of the future, not its victims.»
    - Buckminster Fuller

The book’s purpose was to demonstrate how we can harness the power of Internet media to visualize and build a better world.

INTERNET 2025 presents 7 future scenarios:

The future of health services in Canada

In 2025, after 15 years of progress, disease prevention is central to health services. The promotion of healthy living is finally a practical and effective component of mainstream services. High school students all know how to cook a variety of healthy dishes from around the world. They learned at home, from interactive training videos.

Dietitians play the role of nutrition coaches, and work closely with family doctors and health and fitness specialists. These professionals all collaborate via the patient’s electronic health record.

This scenario has evolved since the publication of INTERNET 2025. It is now called and, and its objective is to help people eat better.

The curtain has come down on Hollywood’s former monopoly, because, now, film lovers have the power to decide what films will be made through small investments of $5 and up in the productions of their choice.

This system has substantially increased the value of advertising on the Internet and has breathed new life into both journalism and the dissemination of quality news and content on the Internet. Organizations like The New York Times and Le Monde have hired more journalists, and, in particular, investigative journalists, as they now dispose of the budgets needed to play a greater role within our democracies. At the same time, new journalistic organizations have sprung up in the wake of the wind of change that swept in between 2015 and 2025.

This scenario has evolved since the publication of INTERNET 2025. The project is now called and advances a new approach to advertising on the Internet.

The introduction of new ways to participate in democratic life has gradually forced elected officials to be much more attentive to citizens, and especially to put their interests ahead of those of large corporations.
